Trinidad & Tobago's Ato Boldon on your right
Every track athlete needs a good coach, and if you don't have a good coach, you would most likely have a terrible time at your track practices. Although one cannot be the "super coach" overnight, there is a book in which can improve your style style of coaching your athletes. Plus, one cannot be a coach from out of nowhere. They are to have a certified coaching certificate (past level one- like me!! I can't be a track coach, AS YET!). But there is a book in the library (Weldon of course) where you can find out how to coach a track team. The book may be old, but it can be very fundamental. No warm-up or cool-down is out of style! The name of the book is The Athletics Congress's track and field coaching manual / the Athletics Congress's development committees with Vern Gambetta, editor

THE PARALYMPIC GAMES!!!!

What are the Paralympic Games? It is just like the Olympic Games, but this competition is for those individuals who have physical and/or mental disabilities. Created by Sir Ludwig Guttmann in 1948, he had organized this sports competition that involved World War II veterans with a spinal cord injury in Stoke Mandeville, England. Four years later, competitors from Holland joined the games and the international movement, now known as the Paralympics, was born.
There was another article that was found in the library catalogue database that explained a little bit of what the life of the Paralymic Games is about. This article is called Exploring competitive orientation in a group of athletes participating in the 1996 Paralympic trials

AGE AND TRACK AND FIELD

Here is another article from the library dealing with the age of athletes participating in track and field. The article is called Changes in track and field performance with chronological aging and it mainly talks about how age affects the way athletes perform in certain events, such as the 400 meter run and the long jump events, both male and female. The article also explained that the event most affected was the javelin for men and the discus for women.

THE USE OF STEROIDS IN TRACK AND FIELD

The use of steroids has caused a lot of controversy in the world of track and field. This shows that athletes who use this performance-enhancing drug are not only cheating themselves, but they are putting an embarassment on their country. Take Ben Johnson for example. He did not only have his gold medal stripped away, but he had put Canada to shame.
Here is another article about the use of steriods in the world of track and field- this is one that I have found in the library. It's called
Too much, too fast, too soon: Chinese women runners, accusations of steroid use, and the politics of American Track and Field

THE WORLD'S FASTEST WOMAN EVER!!

The picture above is of Florence Griffith Joyner, also known as Flo-Jo. She holds the world record for running the 100 and 200 metre sprint. At the 1988 Olympic trials she ran the three fastest 100-meter times ever by a woman and set the American record in the 200-meter dash. Since then, no one has ever beat that record that was set that year. Unfortunately, Flo-jo died as a result of a congenital brain defect on September 21, 1998.

FEMALES IN TRACK AND FIELD
I found a website that focuses on the females that compete in track and field, but the downside to it- there are many female athletes that have eating disorders that actually lead to Anorexia Nervosa. The website mentions that eating disorders have risen drastically in the last ten years, especially among young female athletes, and their (the female athletes) goal is to have a small body frame in order to perform successfully in a track meet. the name of the article on the website is Eating Disorders in Female Athletes

The Canadian 4X100m Relay team...winning the gold medal at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia. click on the link to go to Bruny Surin's (a great Canadian athlete) site. Bruny is the one on the far left...
Since I am of an African-Caribbean descent, I am most likely going to focus mainly on the athletes of African-American Descent...I was looking through the UWO Library Database to see if I could find anything about the African-American Track & Field athletes who recieve academic and athletic scholarships to well known universities...and I bumped into this article called Factors that influence black athletes to accept athletic scholarships from the Pennsylvania State University by Darren Joel Hamilton . It might not be toward just the sport of track and field, but other ones like Basketball, which also has a high number of African-Americans participating in.

African-Americans in Track and Field
Here is a website that displays two Track and Field athetes of African descent that has changed the views of African-Americans in sports: Jesse Owens proved Hitler and the “Aryans” wrong by triumphing in the Olympics and Wilma Rudolph helped cause gender barriers to be broken in previously all-male track and field events.
